DANCE AT “CORA LYNN” - THE JEFFERY FAMILY HOME.
A most enjoyable dance was given by Mrs. J. S. Jeffery at her residence “Cora Lynn,” Brighton, on Saturday, 26th. August. There were about eighty guests present. The large dining-room was given up for dancing, and was prettily decorated with red geranium. The host and hostess received their guests in the hall, which was decorated with large and lovely pot plants. The garden looked like a veritable fairyland with the small, twinkling lights. Supper was served in a large, covered-in verandah, and the table was daintily decorated with daffodils and small vases of primroses and violets.
Mrs. Jeffery wore a handsome gown of saxe blue satin, overdress of floral net. Miss Jeffery was daintily dressed in grey crepe de chene, with tunic of net caught up with small pink roses. Miss L. Talbot wore a charming dress of black velvet. Miss Bonnie Church – white crepe de chene, Miss Muriel Swinburne – mauve ninon, Miss Lorna Reid – pale blue Jap. Silk, Miss Renie Edmanson – pale blue, with tunic of black ninon.
Amongst the other guests were Misses L. and B. Wharton, B. and L. Talbot, E. Bartleman, L. and M. McKinley, A. and N. Crawford, V. Butler, A. and N. Rockett, Davies and Tuckett, Messrs. Graham, Brewer, Drummond, Anderson, Stephen, Lightfoot, O’Sullivan, McIver.

DIMMEY’S MODEL STORES PTY. LTD.
140 – 160 SWAN STREET, RICHMOND, VICTORIA.
140 – 160 SWAN STREET, RICHMOND, VICTORIA.
“Dimmey’s was designed by the prominent architects H. W. & F. B. Tompkins and built in stages between 1907 and 1918 and extended in 1986. It originated in a two-storey drapery store on the corner of Swan and Green Streets, built in 1878 by Joseph Britten, whose family had run a drapery store in the area since 1853. This was purchased in 1898 by Dimelow & Gaylard, a drapery firm from Maryborough, and in 1904 it was taken over by John Jeffery, who retained the by-then colloquial name Dimmeys. The original store suffered fire damage in 1906, and in 1907 a new steel-framed building designed by the Tompkins brothers was built by Robert McDonald. It retained the narrow 1878 façade on Swan Street but had a new American Romanesque façade along Green Street. In 1910 Jeffery began a rebuilding program, with the extension of the store to the west in the same style as the Green Street façade, and also the construction of the clock tower, and he also changed the name to Dimmeys Model Stores, to reflect its high-fashion status. The globe on top of the tower was then clad with ruby glass (replaced in 1939 with copper) with ‘Dimmeys’ written on it. This was lit from inside and was visible for miles. The store was extended further along Swan Street in c1915 and c1918, when Jeffery also replaced the front façade of Britten’s 1878 store. This resulted in uniform facades extending 39 metres along Swan Street and 67 metres along Green Street. The store sold a wide variety of merchandise on the ground floor, and on the first floor were workshops and the mail order service for regional customers. During the depression the store began to focus on quality goods at reduced prices, and in the post-war period it ceased manufacturing and became one of the most prominent bargain stores in Melbourne. The case iron verandahs on Swan Street were removed in 1959. In the 1960s the Roman numerals on the clock faces were replaced with the letters DIMMEYSSTORE, and the cladding around the interior iron columns, the timber service counters and the original pneumatic cash system were removed. The original walk around display windows were removed in 1970. In 1986 Dimmeys acquired another store to the west, and extended the store to Byron Street in a similar style to the original. The company collapsed in 1996 and was sold, but there are still about twenty Dimmeys stores throughout Victoria . In 2004 the local artist Hayden Dewar was commissioned to paint a series of murals representing the history of the store and of Victoria since 1853 along the Green Street façade.”

The history of the acquisition of the land required to build the education facility known as the Brighton Technical School, including the boy’s school and the girls’ school, was not a straight-forward land purchase by the Minister of the Crown Administering the Education Acts. It was a complex exercise. There were several purchases of small parcels of land over many years to meet the needs of this popular and rapidly expanding Technical School. Also, the acquisition documents include several Instruments of Title and Caveats, some of which created property easements.
One of the first purchases by the Minister of the Crown Administering the Education Acts, (also known as the Minister of Public Instruction), preparatory to designing and building Brighton Technical School is detailed in Certificate of Title Volume 3358 Folio 409, when the Minister purchased portion of two acres one rood and five perches or thereabouts, being part of Dendy’s Crown Special Survey Parish of Moorabbin County of Bourke, from Moffat Neilson of No. 35 Clare Street, South Yarra, Cordial Manufacturer, on the 29th. November, 1917. See also Certificate of Title Volume 4108 Folio 571. This purchase of land secured the site on which the boy’s school was built.

THE MINISTER OF THE CROWN ADMINISTERING
THE EDUCATION ACTS 1958.
Instrument T710557N of Certificate of Title Volume 10227 Folio 968 contains details of the sale of a portion of the site of the Brighton Technical School, from the Minister of the Crown Administering the Education Acts 1958, to St. James Park Estate Pty. Ltd., ACN 068078320, of Bay Street, Brighton, on the 5th. May, 1995.
In the following months, further portions of land were sold, and a housing estate of luxury homes was developed on the site of the Brighton Technical School, including the boys’ school and the girls’ school, “Cora Lynn”, both of which were demolished in 1995. The design of the prestigious housing development included a circular area of grass in the centre of the development, which had the appearance of being a ‘private park’, but it is in fact public open space. This open space was meant to be a substitute for the large public area of land fronting Cochrane Street, Brighton, which was lost to the public when the housing development was designed. The postal address of the Brighton Girls’ Technical School was known as 45 Cochrane Street, Brighton, extending through to the Boys’ School in Berwick Street, Brighton, Victoria.
